This is a small kinetic sculpture of Falkor (or Fuchur), the luck dragon from the The Neverending Story.

A crank can be rotated on the end of the model to make the dragon move, with the body following a wave pattern. You can see it in action in the video along with a full explanation of how it works.

The stand also includes some imagery from the story, including the Ivory Tower and Southern Oracle. The black section on the end of the stand represents the Nothing, as it slowly envelopes the world.

For more information and building tips, you can follow the link to this model on my website at https://jkbrickworks.com/flight-of-the-luck-dragon/

As of publishing time, all of the pieces for this model can be ordered directly from LEGO's Bricks and Pieces service for for around $70 USD. The element and design IDs for each part, along with a cost analysis for Bricks and Pieces, Pick A Brick and Bricklink, are also included with the instructions.

I'm working on modifying 80102 too. The original dragon on 80102 is already awesome but this luck dragon flies more beautiful.

Is it possible to transplant this pulley-cam mechanism into the Dragon Dance set without changing the exterior of the Dragon base? I ask because I'm considering ordering the additional parts for that mod and would rather have this smoother motion if possible. Thank you not just for your brilliant kinetic inventions but also for graciously sharing instructions with the world!

This mechanism requires an 8 stud wide base for it to be fully enclosed, whereas the dragon dance set only has a 6 stud wide base. You can definitely make the dragon dance base wider and keep the same look/decorations on it, but it will require some modifications. You would probably have to make it taller as well, to accommodate the increased vertical travel distance.

Thanks! I figured the width would be an issue from the video. I bought the instructions and will try to hybridize the dragon dance after first accomplishing the "official" mod.

why do you have to pay for the instructions? most of the time, all the instructions from JK Brickworks are free

I've started charging for some to help justify the time it takes to make them.

Be happy that he even wants to share the instructions! Not everything has to be for free. It takes time and money to to make instructions/build/test. If you don't like it try to rebuild it on your own instead of complaining ;)

Ruben13 might have been complaining.  Or maybe he simply was interested in knowing what had changed Jason's mind, regarding pricing.  Rather than focus on the former possibility, I'm glad that Jason very usefully and more positively answered with the latter in mind.

Having placed my order for the instructions and pieces, the release of this Luck Dragon is perfect timing, as I needed one for my house.  I will add a pearl to its claw for the best Feng Shui effects and maximum good luck.
