8110 Unimog MOC RC

This is my personal MOC of the awesome 8110 Lego Unimog.

I liked to keep most of the original design, but adding additional technical features by using the plenty of space available in this model.

Additional Features:
- RC controlled drive with XL-motor with two switchable gears (fast/slow) with 4WD and original fake engine
- Can climb slopes up to 65% in low gear
- RC controlled steering with servo motor mounted on front axle
- LED for front lights
- PF switch to control M-motor for pneumatic pump and working devices
- Pneumatic airtank mounted on right side (looks pretty awesome like some real tank)
- Double air pump working 180° phase shifted to balance motor load
- Pneumatic driven 3-side tilting bed (modified by myself to optimize handling, but inspired by eurobricks member Kumbbl (http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=57543&st=1675#entry1939279), who was inspired by barman and tripletschiee). Thankx to eurobrick community for sharing these great ideas!
- optimized fixture for tilting cabin
- and last but not least red seats (must be for me!)

I would love to make this, but with the new Powered up functions and control+ app. I assume I can just replace the servo and xl motor with the powered up versions as one the top gear race car, however I need a spot for the extra hub, any ideas? Also is the pneumatic tank required? As it's very expensive...
    • 2 days, 12 hours ago jb70 Level 16 Designed this MOC PRO
You will need 3 motors, for drive, steering and working devices (pneumatic pump etc.). So the control+ app and the 2 motors from top gear race car will not be sufficient. You would need to create your own app to control this configuration. I am not sure, if the new control+ motors would easily fit inside the Unimog. The control+ hub would replace the power functions battery box. They may do with some modifications.

So if you have the power function motors, I would build it this way.

The pneumatic tank is not essential for function. It will work without the tank, but if you have one, it works better and looks really cool!

Very nice MOC. I just finished it. Everything was straight forward to build. Only at the end, I had some trouble with all the electric wires.

Thank you for providing the instructions!!

Hello! I realize this thread is a bit old but I’m hoping to get some advice on two issues. The first is the difficulty with the switch for the pneumatic/PTO. It’s difficult to operate. Switching it directly it’s fine. Any advice?
Second question is that it’s a bit sluggish. High gear it doesn’t move at all. Batteries are fresh. Anything obvious I should check for? Thank you in advance!
    • 5 months, 2 weeks ago jb70 Level 16 Designed this MOC PRO
Yes, there is backlash in the pneumatic/PTO switch of about 90°. Thats because of the 7 small gears in sequence after this switch. If you don‘t like it, move the switches to the right side.
Does the motor move and stuck, if you try to drive in high gear? Then there may be a blocking gear or to much friction.
Does the motor move and idle in high gear? Then there may be missing a gear? Or one of the dark grey gears on p.3 step12 is mounted in the wrong direction?
      • 5 months, 1 week ago pbratten Level 6
hi! thanks for writing back, i really appreciate it! I will switch the switches over for the PTO switch.
When I put it in high gear, the motor does move and the truck moves forward maybe 1 inch, but that is it, it stops and the motor stops too. I checked the dark grey gear, it's oriented correctly. I guess I should just take it apart and take a look, unless you can think of something else?

Wow such a great Moc! I’ve finally found a used set on eBay and can now make this beautiful addition. I tried to add the parts to Bricklink but it seems to be adding every part to build the entire Unimog. Is there a parts list just for the upgrades ? Any help is much appreciated!
    • 1 year, 10 months ago jb70 Level 16 Designed this MOC PRO
You may use Rebrickable‘s compare function to see which parts are different. For the pneumatic hoses you may also buy some longer ones and cut them by yourself. Have fun with your build!

I bought the Unimog a few years ago and always wanted to rebuild it full RC with improved steering/suspension, pneumatic and tilt bed. I’d seen this MOC a while back but had not got around to buying an air tank (at a reasonable price).

Now, thanks to eBay, I had chance to build the MOC. I’m really impressed with the modifications and that they do not detract from the original design of the Unimog. Instructions are of high quality and the build experience was really good. I was hoping that the inclusion of the double piston compressor and the air tank would improve the pneumatic functions of the crane compared to the original design. Whilst it’s an improvement it’s still pretty slow and clunky to operate the crane. I do however really like the tilting tray and how responsive the pneumatic are.

The crane itself I modified with a  rear PTO pass through from a design by Kumbbl on Eurobricks. I’m intending to add some PTO attachments in the future. My initial attempt includes the adapted 8063 trailer also featured by Kumbbl.

I included my final build on the photos page.

I just finished this awesome MOC and had a lot of fun. Wirklich eine geile Kiste :-)
Thanks a lot, Jens, for uploading!
    Just two questions/ remarks:
    1) The stabilisator for the front axle seems to be not in the perfect position, should be half stud shifted to the middle. Maybe an construction error in the original model, please have a look in booklet 2, step 19. The rear axle is perfect.
    2) Instead of the infrared receivers I chose a Sbrick, which provides 4 channels, perfect for the 3 motors and the light. In the SBrick App you'll find 5 for the 8110, but it is not clear for me if one of them fits to the MOC. Do I have to program it by myself? Any ideas on this?

Dear Jens, thanks again for this outstanding MOC
    Best regards from Madrid

I'm glad that you like it.
      To your questions:

      1) You are right. For the stabilisator I just kept the geometry of the original 8110. In that case the front axle is centered only under full suspension load. If you like it to be centered without load, you may just replace one part in booklet 2, page 30 like this:

But I think, both designs are fully functional.

      2) I think you need to design your own profile for SBrick using Profile Designer. Just try it out. It's not a big deal.

what is 58124c01? is it necessary?
    • 2 years, 5 months ago jb70 Level 16 Designed this MOC PRO
No, it is a sub part and is already included in the motors and cables. I removed it from the inventory.
      Thankx for your question!

    Great Mod.

But I have an issue with the switches for the pnematic pump or the winch. The are very loosely and switching doesen't work very well. Is this a General issue or did I maybe build it wrong?
    • 3 years, 4 months ago jb70 Level 16 Designed this MOC PRO
Yes, there is backlash in this switch of about 90°. Thats because of the 7 small gears in sequence after this switch. Try to operate the red switch on the right side directly to see, if the gear change itself works perfectly in your build. Is your problem solved then?

Very nice upgrade, and thank you for the effort. One comment:
When the suspension is compressed, the marked area in

rubs hardly with (sometimes crashes into) the black 15x1 beam when it is connected because of the slight lateral sway in suspension, caused by linkage. I removed both dark gray 5x3 and 4x2 altogether to avoid that.
    Here's what I did:

The rounded edges prevent rubbing to the 1x15 beam upwards and it works mostly in shear so it does not come apart even with the huge power of servo motor.
    My two-penn'orth. :)

Thanks for your feedback and solution idea!

I was allready aware of this issue, but didn't find a good solution for this until now. Your solution idea inspired me for a more robust construction of the steering unit, to avoid parts getting loose when the Unimog hits any obstacles. Following your idea with the rounded edges the suspension does not rub or crash hardly to the 15x1 beam any more.

I have updated my part list and instructions on this site. This is my modification of the front axle:
      • 4 years ago Chilekesh Level 12 MOC Designer
It looks much sturdier now. Though I feel the 4x2 at the backside (to lock the assembly in place) is still necessary so that the assembly is impossible to come apart from the motor, and also even if the middle does bulge a little, it will correct itself automatically. The axle line of the servo takes the largest load when the servo is activated.

My 8110 has been slowly dying on my shelf as I take parts from it, and I think this is just the mod to revitalize it. Nice work
