    I think it's just too big and heavy so it needs all the internal framework to reduce bending when it is picked up.
    You could replace frame with corridors, etc., and I've seen people do it, but the result is a more fragile model strictly for static display, which wouldn't meet Lego design guidelines.

    Expert SNOTing.  It's fascinating how you turn bricks around with hinges and headlights so that there are bricks facing in every direction.  Well done.

    For others looking at building this, it depends on where you live. I'm in Australia and the cost is over $600.
    There's many rare parts in this set.
